Managing Nausea with Spravato®: Practical Tips from Clinicians

GeT iN tOUCH

Feeling nauseated after your Spravato® (esketamine) treatment can be unpleasant — but it’s also common, temporary, and manageable. Mild nausea is one of the most frequently reported side effects of Spravato®, and most patients find it improves within hours or with a few simple adjustments.
At Blue Water Psychiatry, our experienced clinicians guide patients through every step of Spravato® therapy — from preparation to recovery. We’ve gathered these clinically tested, real-world tips to help you minimize nausea and feel more comfortable during your treatment journey.

Why Spravato® Can Cause Nausea

Spravato® is a nasal spray form of esketamine, a medication that acts on brain receptors involved in mood regulation and neural growth. Because it also temporarily affects balance, blood pressure, and perception, some patients experience mild nausea, dizziness, or a “floating” sensation.
These effects:

  • Usually begin within minutes of dosing
  • Peak during the 40–60 minutes after administration
  • Subside naturally by the end of your two-hour monitoring period
While nausea is usually mild, preparation and aftercare make a big difference in comfort and overall treatment experience.

Before Your Spravato® Session: Preventive Strategies

  1. Avoid heavy meals for 2–3 hours before treatment
A full stomach can worsen nausea, while an empty one may cause dizziness. Try a light snack, such as crackers, toast, or fruit, about an hour before your appointment.
  2. Stay hydrated — but sip, don’t chug
Dehydration can make nausea more intense. Drink water steadily throughout the day, but avoid large amounts immediately before dosing.
  3. Discuss preventive medications with your provider
Your clinician may recommend taking an anti-nausea medication (such as ondansetron/Zofran) about 30 minutes before treatment if you’ve experienced nausea in previous sessions.
  4. Skip caffeine before dosing
Coffee and energy drinks can raise heart rate and amplify jitteriness or queasiness. Opt for herbal tea or water instead.
  5. Dress comfortably and rest well
Tiredness or tight clothing can heighten discomfort. Arrive relaxed, in comfortable attire, and well-rested for your session.

During Your Spravato® Treatment

  1. Recline and relax
Once you’ve self-administered the nasal spray, rest comfortably in the reclined chair provided. Close your eyes or focus softly on one point in the room.
  2. Breathe slowly and steadily
Deep, rhythmic breathing helps regulate your nervous system and minimizes sensations of nausea.
  3. Use grounding or distraction techniques
Gentle background music, guided imagery, or focusing on your breathing pattern can redirect attention away from discomfort.
  4. Communicate with your provider
Our team monitors you closely throughout the session. If nausea develops, let us know — we can offer anti-nausea medication or adjust your position to help you feel better.

After Your Appointment: Recovery Tips

  1. Take it slow
Nausea typically fades within one to two hours after your session. Move slowly when standing, and avoid sudden head movements.
  2. Eat light and bland foods
Once you feel ready, start with simple foods like crackers, rice, bananas, or soup. Avoid spicy or greasy meals until your stomach feels settled.
  3. Rest and hydrate
Spend the rest of the day in a calm environment, drinking water or electrolyte beverages. Avoid alcohol or caffeine until the next day.
  4. Note patterns
Keep track of when nausea occurs and how long it lasts. This helps your provider fine-tune your pre-treatment plan or dosing schedule.
  5. Give your body grace
It’s common to feel fatigued or mildly off-balance after Spravato®. These sensations usually fade by the following day — and most patients notice improvement with each subsequent session.
