Flashbacks and dissociation can feel like being pulled out of the present and thrown into a past trauma. For individuals living with PTSD, anxiety, or complex trauma, grounding techniques help bring the mind and body back to the here and now. At Blue Water Psychiatry, we support patients across Mesa, Phoenix, Gilbert, Queen Creek, and surrounding Arizona communities with tools like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique to manage overwhelming moments.
What Is the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique?
The 5-4-3-2-1 method is a sensory awareness exercise designed to interrupt spiraling thoughts or flashbacks by refocusing your attention on your immediate surroundings. It uses all five senses to anchor you in the present.
How to Practice It:
- 5 Things You Can See: Look around and name five visible objects. Be specific (e.g., “blue mug,” “framed photo,” “plant with round leaves”).
- 4 Things You Can Touch: Notice texture and temperature—your clothing, the chair beneath you, a cool glass of water.
- 3 Things You Can Hear: Tune in to sounds near and far: birds chirping, a clock ticking, distant traffic.
- 2 Things You Can Smell: If nothing stands out, try smelling your shirt, lotion, or a nearby object. You can also keep a calming scent nearby, like lavender.
- 1 Thing You Can Taste: Take a sip of water, suck on a mint, or simply notice the taste in your mouth.
Repeat as needed until you feel more grounded.
